On a breezy February afternoon, the sun finally broke through at the Willows Youth Services Center, and for the first time since installing the basketball court in late November, young adults were able to truly use the space. Within minutes, the court filled with laughter, friendly competition, and young adults just being young adults. These young adults survive so much in their lives every day and want to feel connected, not unseen; it’s amazing to witness moments where they can just be people and feel human despite all the hardships they face. Shooting hoops, teasing each other, celebrating every shot, and soaking up the moment together.
What looked like a simple pickup game meant much more to our team. It was a real-time reminder of what safety and trust look like. When young adults feel safe and have a sense of belonging, their walls come down—you see it in their smiles, laughter, playful teasing, and authentic connection. In those moments, their joy and community shine, showing that healing happens when young adults feel seen, supported, and secure.
As Youth Specialist Demetrius shared,
“There are a lot of fancy ways to measure success. One way is when they’re smiling, showboating, and clowning. That means they feel safe.”
Moments like this ground us in our purpose. Creating spaces where youth can heal, connect, and simply feel joy is the impact.
