Moments of crisis can create meaningful opportunities for connection and hope. I was reminded of this on a rainy day in June while visiting a foster caregiver’s home. During that time, I witnessed a youth who has faced incredibly complex, real-life challenges begin to navigate what it means to seek support and build trust, something that can feel unfamiliar after experiences shaped by inconsistency and instability. The foster caregiver offered a powerful reminder: in foster care, both caregiver and youth often begin as strangers, yet are asked to build family and connection almost overnight. Despite that reality, something meaningful unfolded in that moment. The youth courageously shared her vulnerabilities and opened up in a way that spoke to her strength, resilience, and most importantly, a desire for connection. 

It was a powerful reminder of why we continue to show up, especially on the difficult days when the work feels heavy and uncertain. This young person demonstrated a level of insight and maturity that allowed us a glimpse into her world, while also showing a willingness to trust and seek support from the caring adults around her. In that moment, hope was not just present; it was being actively built through connection, patience, and consistent care. This is the heart of our work. It’s in the quiet, unplanned moments where trust begins to take root, where caregivers lean in, and where youth begin to believe, sometimes for the first time, that safe, supportive relationships are possible. These are the moments that remind us that what we do matters. And it’s why we continue to show up, every day, committed to creating spaces where connection can grow and hope can take hold.
