challenging the status quo: building safer, more equitable communities

At Friends of Youth, we believe everyone deserves to experience safety, belonging, and opportunity. Yet we know that safety is not experienced equally. When harmful behaviors become normalized, and diverse communities continue to face discrimination, dehumanization, and attacks on their identities and rights, the impact is real, and it shapes how people experience their communities, relationships, and systems.

Challenging the status quo means being willing to recognize these realities and examine how they show up in the spaces where we work and live. Our equity work continues with a conscious, trauma-informed approach that centers lived and living experience. We recognize that trauma and dehumanization continue to affect individuals and communities, and that meaningful change requires us to listen to those experiences while honoring the strengths, resilience, and knowledge of those who have survived and are seeking healing.

This quarter, we continued building organizational capacity to put these principles into practice. Through our internal certified trauma-informed care Trainers, we have equipped leaders to promote continued learning and help advance conversations across Friends of Youth. Our focus is on increasing awareness, shifting attitudes, challenging assumptions, recognizing strengths, and building the relationships and practices necessary to create more equitable outcomes.

We are proud to have begun in-person learning sessions for our employees and remain committed to creating opportunities for continued learning and reflection. These spaces invite honest conversation about how we move this work forward, grounded in history and informed by lived experience.

This work is deeply connected to who we are as Friends of Youth. Collaboration, honest and sustained relationships, and equitable outcomes are more than aspirations; they are reflected in our organizational values and in how we seek to show up for young people, families, and communities.

We know this is a journey, not a destination. We are committed to continuing the learning, strengthening our collective capacity, and creating spaces where difficult truths can be acknowledged, strengths can be recognized, and new possibilities for healing, belonging, and equity can emerge.
