Friends of Youth was honored by U.S. Senator Patty Murray's recent visit this month to the new Willows Youth Service Center in Kirkland. She participated in a tour of the facility led by Friends of Youth President and CEO Paul Lwali and Friends of Youth Board Chair, Alex Lee and Vice Chair, Kristen Reed. The support of Senator Murray has been essential to the creation of the new emergency shelter for youth and young adults, which will open later this year.
“Friends of Youth does really important work assisting youth experiencing homelessness and providing support for mental and behavioral health challenges. This week I was delighted to hear about how federal funds I secured are helping them build a new facility to further their critical mission,” said U.S. Senator Patty Murray, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “In the Senate, I’ll keep doing everything I can to tackle the housing and homelessness crises—absolutely everyone deserves a roof over their head and a safe place to call home.”
The new facility will operate 24/7, expand available emergency shelter beds from 20 to 35, and provide integrated behavioral health, substance use treatment, basic medical care, nutrition, and hygiene facilities. Thank you to all the employees who are pulling together to ensure decisions being made are trauma-informed, and promote safety, inclusivity, and belonging.
