As we honor the upcoming Mental Health Awareness Month and National Foster Care Awareness Month in May, Friends of Youth remains grounded in two essential principles: care and equity. These values guide how we serve our community and how we move forward together—especially during times of transition.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to trauma informed care and authentic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). These approaches are deeply interconnected. They remind us to meet people with empathy, recognize the complexity of lived experiences, and foster spaces where healing and growth are possible for all.

Our communities continue to face the impacts of racism, classism, xenophobia, homophobia, and other forms of systemic oppression. At Friends of Youth, we believe in advocating for change that uplifts not just one group, but all who are affected. Inclusion means making room for the full spectrum of identities and ensuring that no one is left out of the conversation.

As we evolve as an organization, we are reflecting deeply on what practices truly support lasting impact. We are learning that meaningful change is not created through division, but through connection. Advocacy is most effective when it centers compassion, shared responsibility, and a desire to build together, rather than to correct or isolate.

Our work with youth and families teaches us this every day. Whether through housing, behavioral health, or supportive services, we see the power of unity and resilience in action. And while the landscape continues to shift, our commitment to equity and community remains strong.

We are grateful for every partner, donor, and community member who walks alongside us. Together, we are shaping a future where all youth feel seen, supported, and valued.
