Potential foster parents can be single, married, or non-traditional couples; and can be renters or homeowners. In addition to the basic foster parent qualifications, ideal candidates will exhibit the following:
- Awareness of youth issues
- Awareness of mental health issues
- Experience with behaviorally challenged youth
- Patience
- Strong parenting skills
- Ability to set boundaries
- Strong sense of time commitment
- Ability to stay calm during a crisis
- Willingness to be part of a team
- Desire to further personal skills
- Consistency of actions
- Stable schedule with some flexibility
- Ability to take direction
- Openness to diversity
- Ability to work with kids that have experienced trauma
- Ability to provide a safe and stable home
- Access to reliable transportation
- Willingness to attend monthly training
- Compliance with agency/state standards
- Ability to teach social and independent living skills
- Interest in positively affecting a young person’s life
- Interest in giving back to society
- Ability to develop special relationships with kids who need a solid community connection
