Weekend Relief, On-Call Youth Counselor
Description
The Emergency Shelter Weekend Relief/On-call
Youth Counselor provides supervision and performs certain guidance tasks in
a shelter home for runaway, homeless, and/or at-risk adolescents, implements
agency and shelter policies, and is responsible for the safety and
cleanliness of the facility.
This position is non-exempt from the Federal Fair
Labor Standards Act and the Washington Minimum Wage Act.
Responsibilities

Guidance and Supervision
-
Respect confidentiality of the youth
and her/his family.

Provide a safe, caring and
non-judgmental environment for the youth. Follow house
ground rules. Set appropriate limits and boundaries.

Use consistent and fair discipline.
-
Respect differences in the youth's
cultural, social, sexual and religious background. Enhance
cultural pride.
-
Listen and respond to youth concerns on a one-to-one
basis. Clarify information and attitudes, and provide important
agency information to youth as well as support.

Maintain chore schedule, monitor chore activities and
facilitate daily house meetings with youth that address house
concerns.

Provide a minimum of 2 meals daily for the youth.

Report to Houseparent or Program
Manager extraordinary changes in youth's behavior and family
situation. Give update to Houseparent at end of shift.

Involve youth in diverse activities
during weekend. Provide transportation and supervision on
all activities.

Safety
- Report problems or damage to the shelter immediately
to the agency maintenance department or Houseparent.

Record Keeping
-
Record medication disbursements.
-
Maintain and review daily log of youth
behavior.

Manage and maintain records of shelter
funds (activity money, gas).

Insure the timely completion of client paperwork including:
intake paperwork, one-to-one form, and house meeting sheet.

Supervision
-
May be assigned responsibility of
supervising shelter volunteers.

Attend monthly staff meetings.
-
Meet with Program Manager as needed for
appropriate supervision.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education and Experience
-
A Bachelor's Degree in the Social
Sciences field and/or relevant experience is strongly preferred.

At least 21 years of age and in
generally good health.

Have no serious criminal record.

Must have valid Washington State
driver's license or be able to obtain one by the employment
date.

Employees and volunteers who operate
their own or Friends of Youth vehicles on Friends of Youth
business must have a safe driving record as defined by Friends
of Youth. Employees and volunteers who operate their own
vehicle(s) on Friends of Youth business must carry auto
liability insurance that complies with the requirements of
Friends of Youth.

Must have Red Cross First Aid/CPR
card and Food Handler's permit.

Must pass TB screening.

Education or experience in cultural
competency.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to develop warm and open
relationships with youth.

Ability to observe and discuss
behavior problems and suggest appropriate alternatives.

Ability to work in a setting that can
be highly stressful.

Knowledge of relevant COA standards
and participation in the Continuous Quality Improvement process.

Must demonstrate sensitivity and
responsiveness to cultural differences and a commitment to the
value of cultural competency.

Weekday and Weekend shifts available.
