Position Title
Residential Youth Counselor
Description
Residential Youth Counselor (RYC) positions are Bachelor entry level
counseling positions, which provide intensive training to staff to support
appropriate and meaningful relationships with youth. Counselors work for a
therapist with specialized training that provides oversight for the
therapeutic milieu. There are three separate programs available for
employment on our newly remodeled Griffin Home Campus in Renton, WA. Clients
are boys, 13 to 18, referred through the Division of Child and Family
Services, Juvenile Rehabilitative Services, or are though private pay. The
programs focus on institutional transition, sexually aggressive behaviors,
or independent living for higher risk youth who have completed a therapeutic
program but would be better served in a more supportive environment.
Responsibilities
As Primary Counselor for a small caseload, each counselor is responsible for
developing behavior modification point sheets, treatment calendars and treatment
plans for individual clients with support from the Clinical Program Manager. This
allows entry staff professional creative growth and psychological writing skills for
future employment, and builds healthy relationships with each youth. Cognitive
Behavior Therapy training includes Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills; the
Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration Integrated Treatment Model; Pathways, A
Guided Workbook for Children with Sexual Behavior Problems by Timothy J. Kahn,
and the opportunity to co-facilitate client groups with master level clinicians and
CSOTP. Other trainings may include Psychotropic Medications, Cultural Diversity,
Family Therapy, Mental Health Diagnosis, Chemical Dependency, Gang Behavior,
and others. Although restraint and de-escalation training is provided, physical
restraints of youth are discouraged and those youth requiring restraints are referred
to more restrictive programs designed for physical management of youth.
Required Skills and Qualifications
A qualified candidate for these positions is generally one who intends to pursue
a clinical career path, obtain a higher educational degree, obtain experience for
state employment, or is deciding which population is more appealing or

are a must. An ability to pass a criminal history background check and driver’s
license is required. Other requirements within the first fifteen days of
