Position Title

Director of Development

Description

Plans, organizes and manages the agency's fundraising programs, including annual campaigns, planned giving, and endowment programs. Develops ties with community organizations, corporations, and individual supporters. Oversees the volunteer program and other opportunities to engage supporters in the agency.

Responsibilities

  1. Areas of Accountability
    1. Develop and implement annual fundraising plans to meet annual revenue objectives
    2. Develop and implement strategies for diversifying and increasing long-term funding.
    3. Increase the donor base by developing and implementing a plan for cultivation and ongoing donor relations.
    4. Monitor and evaluate fundraising activities.
    5. Raise awareness of the mission and programs with donors and prospects through effective and efficient communications.
    6. Train the board of directors, staff and volunteers in effective fund development strategies and practices.
    7. Oversee the donor database management.
    8. Supervise the work of the Development and Marketing staff.
    9. Develop and implement annual support plan for Friends of Youth Foundation.
    10. Build and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with Program Staff/Program Directors.
  2. Donor Identification, Cultivation, and Stewardship
    1. Develop, implement, and evaluate strategies for successful fundraising campaigns including mail and online appeals, major gifts, workplace campaigns, foundation grants and special events.
    2. Identify and cultivate new donors, particularly from family foundations, private foundations and major donors.
    3. Develop ways to move donors and prospective donors up the “development ladder” from direct mail to annual and major gifts to planned gifts (Moves Management).
    4. Develop ways to recognize and steward (educate, inform, and involve) donors.
    5. Oversee the Development staff work to ensure that all gifts received are acknowledged in a timely manner.
    6. Work with board, executive director, and Leadership Team to develop relationships with major donors and foundations and to arrange contact to cultivate and solicit donors.
    7. Oversee the creation of all donor materials, such as brochures and the annual report.
  3. Volunteer Management
    1. Oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of annual strategies to engage volunteers in the work of the agency; ensuring that volunteers are used effectively, appreciated for their work and supported in completing assigned tasks.
  4. Marketing Management
    1. Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of annual marketing strategies to communicate and promote awareness of the mission and products of the organization.
  5. Community Relations
    1. Identify opportunities for outreach to community and other organizations promoting the Friends of Youth brand and contributing to Friends of Youth’s visibility in communities and organizations.
    2. Serve as a point of contact and support for third party initiatives, collaborating with the Leadership Team for oversight and reporting.
    3. Guide board members and other volunteers in fundraising.
    4. Help ensure that development volunteers feel valued and appreciated.
  6. Administration
    1. Contribute to the smooth functioning of organizational operations that are affected by marketing and fundraising through effective coordination of work and timelines.
    2. Provide research and project support to Leadership Team as assigned.
    3. Ensure that donor’s gifts are acknowledged in a timely manner.
    4. Supervise the Development Associate, Volunteer Coordinator, Government Grants Write, Grant Writer and Donor Relations Manager.
    5. Generate and analyze quarterly and annual fundraising reports.
    6. Track and generate pledge and matching gift reminders.
    7. Generate and utilize other reports and queries as needed.
    8. Participate in budgeting process for development budget.
    9. Maintain the highest standard of ethics, integrity, and professional practice in development activities.
    10. Keep abreast of development issues by attending seminars, conferences, professional organization meetings, networking, and reading literature on current trends.

Required Skills and Qualifications

    1. Bachelors Degree in relevant field, with continuing professional development and education.
    2. Proven experience (5 years or more) in strategic fund development planning and implementation; securing major gifts; successful annual campaigns; securing foundation grants; donor cultivation; and working with board fund development committees.
    3. Proven experience in planning and strategy development for volunteer management.
    4. Proven track record establishing and achieving revenue objectives.
    5. Proven successful ability to develop work plans and manage multiple projects.
    6. Proven experience in developing successful relationships with businesses, community organizations, and board member-level volunteers.
    7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
    8. Demonstrated ability to work with individuals of diverse religious, social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
    9. Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
    10. Ability and aptitude with current Microsoft software and data base management programs.
    11. Commitment to the mission of Friends of Youth.
    12. Sense of humor and strong work ethic.
